The Mis en Place of Life

How Planning Can Boost Your Mental Wellness

Ever watched a master chef in action?

Before the sizzling pans and artful plating begins, there is a magical phase known as mise en place—a French term meaning “everything in its place.” In the culinary world, it is all about preparation. Every ingredient is chopped, measured, and ready to go. Then, when it is time to cook, it is all systems go, and magic happens.

Life is no different.

Imagine if your days had that same kind of flow—a rhythm where preparation meets execution, and stress gives way to clarity. This is where planning comes into play, not just as a tool for productivity, but as a cornerstone of mental wellness.

Now, let me let you in on a secret. I am what some would call a stickler. I plan, and I stick to my plans with a passion that sometimes borders on stubbornness. When life throws me a curveball, I will admit—I spin out for a moment. But here is what I have learned: It is not about having a perfect plan; it is about having a framework that grounds you.

Over time, I have developed tools to manage this part of myself:

  • Flexibility: Understanding that plans can adapt and still serve me.
  • Perspective: Realizing that detours often hold unexpected lessons for me.
  • Grace: Allowing myself the space to fail forward and try again.

When I embrace planning with this mindset, it becomes a lifeline. It keeps me ready for opportunities, helps me step into my potential, and, most importantly, brings peace. Whether tasks unfold in neat little rows or chaotically tumble together, the very act of having a plan is soothing.

For those of us who thrive on order and structure, planning is not just about ticking boxes—it is about creating a sanctuary where mental wellness can thrive.

So, what is your mise en place for life?
