It’s LONELY at the TOP

I was seated at my dining table preparing for the week of training ahead of me, when I had this déjà vu feeling.

?I was transported back to employment.  I was seated at my desk at around 9pm preparing for the week ahead (old habits die hard).  I could hear the silence around me….I was alone in the office and it was my best time, and way to work.  My mind was crystal clear and I was in my zone.

?As I prepared for that week ahead, about 3 years ago, I wouldn’t have known how my life was about to change drastically.  I was about to have that conversation of – it’s not working and we have to part ways – that conversation.

Anyway I digress.

?As I sat at my office desk, I suddenly felt so lonely.  I had a team of direct reports who looked up to me for direction and guidance. I poured myself selflessly, my orientation is servant leadership, it is about my team and service, as opposed to power, position, status, fame or office politics.

Why lonely? Because I could not share with them my fears, doubts and insecurities.

?Neither could I share with my boss.  The system did not provide for that kind of safe space. That just left me so vulnerable to depression.  So I soldiered on, and did what I had to do.  I showed up day after day after day.  I weathered the storm without a place to take shelter.  I was lonely and it was beginning to take a toll on my body.

How many leaders are out there without a safety net?

You see the system provides for the line staff, and heads of departments, but not for the top management.

Today I am the change that I want to see.  I speak of this gap and offer my coaching services.  It gives one clarity on how to manage life situations like loneliness.  We focus on self, support and voice.

It doesn’t need to be lonely at the top.

Talk to me.
