Thrash Out Your Blocks

Part One: Winnowing

Thoughts can be very distractive if not channeled well.

Imagine a situation where everything is happening simultaneously and there are so many moving parts. Thoughts are seemingly running amok. Now onto that add an emotional state from a previous situation that has not been addressed. This melting pot can be quite volatile and may even cause one to feel helpless.

📌As a #Coach, I help you to quieten down your thoughts and funnel them to the here and now. Our conversation is a process of sorting out these thoughts, one at a time.

Growing up in the village, part of my chores included pounding maize in the traditional way, using a mortar and pestle. After pounding the maize into flour, we would remove the chaff through winnowing. We kept the flour in tight containers. The chaff on the other hand was either added to the animal food or the compost.

I relate this memory of winnowing to that of sorting out my thoughts, and I bring this to my Coaching and Mentorship sessions.

📌At times all we need is a moment to collect ourselves, take a breath and take a ‘chill pill’ as we used to say in our youth. This pause allows us to slow down the chatter in our minds.

In a previous chapter, I questioned the Family values that I had been exposed to. In that instance, they had come to the fore, and I took them on as my identity. I set myself apart, sort of like my USP or maybe a better term would be DNA, or was it -personal identity?

I knew beyond reasonable doubt that this is who I was…or was it? Or were these my limiting beliefs?

▪️The winnowing process suggests that I should separate the chaff from the maize for a sustainable future.

▪️It suggests that the chaff had served its purpose of protecting the maize up until now, and it was no longer useful.

✔️I liken my limiting beliefs to the chaff. They served their purpose of making sense of my reality in a particular season of my life.

✔️It is time now to do away with them and create a new narrative.

✔️I am cognizant of the time span, for it too shall serve its purpose, expire, and create space for a new narrative.
