Benched

With the football season all around us, benched would be a common term. This is when a player is withdrawn from the game for various reasons which could include arriving late for a game, missing practice, being disrespectful, making mistakes, an injury and so on.
This however is not unique to football only and can be applied to our daily lives.
?Every day, we are faced with decisions to make. You can take your pick from when to wake up, to when to go to bed, when to eat and when to drink, when to pray and when to play. When to close a deal and when to walk away. When to stay and when to run. The decisions are endless, yet they have to be made so that we can proceed and live our lives to the best of our abilities.
??This past week I had the honour of attending 2 graduations of Hospitality Institutions.
??At one of them I was the Chief Guest and as is expected, I delivered the main message of the day.
It was these daily decisions that came to mind as I prepared my ‘Guest of Honour’ speech, and it tied in very well with the theme which was – ‘Do not just survive. Thrive’

??Our lives can be in auto pilot till kingdom come if we do not intentionally choose to make something out of it.
??There is the danger of getting benched in the different areas of our lives.
??The sun rises and sets and this informs one day to the next with new beginnings and conclusions or end of seasons. We all have 24 hours a day and we can choose to be:?Victims – Things are happening to us.?Freeze Mode – Head in the sand response.?Creator – Make the best of every situation
PURPOSE

Without knowing your #purpose, it is very easy to just survive from one day to the next. As you identify your purpose you are responding to knowing who you are and what you want out of life. You set out plans to your dreams and list out actions of which you execute. You are in the ‘game’.

EXCELLENCE

Executing actions can be a mundane task. You quickly realize that in this ‘game’ space, many people are also working on their action plans and your market share is diminishing fast as it may seem. You need to stand out, you need to have a unique selling proposition (USP).
??Deepak Chopra said:”If you focus on success, you will have stress, but if you pursue excellence then success will be guaranteed”.
So what is excellence?

✔Excellence is a habit. We are what we repeatedly do.

✔Excellence is an attitude.

✔Excellence happens in small doses.

✔Excellence is about doing the best you can with what you have.

✔Excellence is a refusal to adopt a half -hearted, sloppy perspective of life.

However to note:

Excellence is not perfectionism.

Excellence is not a destination, it is journey. On this journey we are faced with ups and downs.

Excellence is not about other people. It is about you as an individual.

◾My message to the graduands was to pursue #excellence in all aspects of their lives, and to build up that unique selling proposition and not get benched in life, but to thrive and enjoy the best life has to offer.
